TAKE HEED AND BE SAFE

Marsh madness is at full throttle. The state men’s basketball tournament is providing some great first-class entertainment for the many local avid round ball fans. It’s all happening in Lake Chuck out at Burton Coliseum.

High school basketball more than fills the bill for pure excitement and fast pace. Those youngsters had Burton rocking and rolling and electric with energy. The teams were absolutely first-class and obviously very well-coached and disciplined. They put on a great show.

We saw the Wossman High School amazing half-court shot at the buzzer that upset a great Peabody team. The place came unglued, with players hitting their knees. Witnessing that shot alone was well worth the price of admission with change.

Our corner of this great state just dodged a bullet and barely missed a bad weather system that inflicted some major pain. High velocity winds followed by heavy bands of rain caused flooding in areas just north of us. A lot of the run-off is headed south and will affect our area eventually. Please stay tuned.

Before the rains came, spring fishing was getting real right. Early speckled trout reports from Big Lake have been encouraging, and we hope these fish will be on the menu soon. For an entrée, a healthy redfish works nicely. For dessert, put a wide flounder in the box, and you’re set for some healthy gourmet meals.

Toledo Bend is off to a fabulous spring spawn start. Several double-digit hawgs have already been caught, and it’s just going to get better as the water warms.

Beautiful Lacassine Reserve is open, and not a moment too soon. This giant freshwater impoundment can be a bass fisherman’s best friend. Lacassine has produced its fair share of lunker marsh bass over 10 pounds, and local anglers are chomping at the bit.

For sheer beauty and wildlife, Lacassine can’t be beat. And, the fishing ain’t half bad either! Officials are allowing up to 40 horsepower motors in the reserve this year. But be careful! The many hairpin turns and blind spots in the tight trails are a recipe for a head-on collision. It’s happened before, so take heed and be safe.

Spring turkey season is here. It provides a great excuse to get out in the middle of Mother Nature.

Gus Stacy was sighted in and psyched for a big gobbler to come gliding in. It’s always a thrill to fool a mature tom with a very high hunter IQ.

If you’re really just bored to death, check out some breaking news on the current political races. For pure comedy, it’s hard to beat. The question of the month is, “Are these really the best candidates their parties can produce?” Anyway, they’re entertaining, in a loathsome sort of way.

There have been great performances by the Saints of St. Louis and the Charging Indians of Washington-Marion basketball teams, which have had outstanding seasons. Congratulations are in order. Thanks for the memories.
