GO WITH THE FLOW

GO WITH THE FLOW

Sometimes you have to just go with the flow. Fishermen who have the know-how to adjust to the conditions consistently put more fish in the boat. If the weather isn’t conducive to your preferred method of fishing — change!

The fish adapt their feeding patterns to current conditions, and so must the effective anglers. Each day is different, with variable conditions that are always changing. Top-notch fishermen are the few who are sensitive to changing patterns and have the ability to alter their style and presentation according to the bite.

Dwayne McDaniel and Matt Brumwell motored out for an exciting saltwater fishing adventure. They were near Lambert Lake, and the water looked good. Shrimp and bait fish were visible, so they cut the motor and glided in.

Rocke 1015 PIC Both anglers are dedicated fly fishermen, and started out working lifelike artificial crabs on the end of their leaders. But the wind is a fly fisherman’s worst nightmare, and it began to strengthen.

It was time for a change of strategy. Both anglers were prepared with standard casting outfits and knew how to work them. They tied on topwater surface baits, and the fun was about to commence. It helps to be versatile.

There is nothing that compares to the thrill of a speckled trout or redfish attacking a surface lure. The attacks are deadly, and usually made by larger-than-your-garden variety fish. Matt and Dwayne knew just how to “walk the dog,” and began to light up the aggressive fish.

At the end of the day, they wore out the redfish and were in catch and release mode. Just for lagniappe, Dwayne scored a giant speckled trout weighing in just over eight pounds that blew it up and made the day.

Big specks and beacoup redfish attacking topwater baits — and it doesn’t get any better.

One of the advantages of surviving an enduring tropical Louisiana summer season is the gratitude you feel when the season changes. A few early cool fronts pushed in by a low-humidity north wind have felt like a little slice of heaven for local sportsmen. Lows in the 50s spelled relief for hardcore Louisiana hunters and fishermen, of which there are many.

And right on cue, another cool front approaches. Forecasts call for temperatures to possibly fall into the 40s, making for some mighty fine time to find an excuse to get outside. Football, hunting and fishing head up the list, and it’s a cool time of year.

There’s nothing like the feeling of a rejuvenating cool front. It will put some pep in your step and keep the bugs at bay at the same time.

You might find yourself up a tree if you are one of many local bow hunters who love their sport. To close the distance into bow range on a wild deer is a special feeling. They are super-intelligent animals, and have the utmost respect of the people who hunt them.

The honorary early bird award for first deer of the year will once again be bestowed on one lucky hunter by the crew at Hackett’s Cajun Kitchen. Yours truly has been a past consecutive award winner and hopes are high. The annual winner gets a T-shirt and a pat on the back from Denise! The second best part of bow hunting is a new batch of sausage to die for. It’s time to go hunting!08
