An Act Of Kindness

An Act Of Kindness

It may be prudent for our country to exercise the option of taking a time-out. There is way too much violence; and there are too many senseless murders; in what is still the greatest country in the world.

There seems to be an ongoing trend of blatant stupidity that results way too often in someone losing their life. It’s a serious and dangerous business that has a way of making people feel insecure. It may be time for a chill pill.

There is too much good going on around here to get caught up in the epidemic of bad news. God bless the victims and families that have lost loved ones. Our thoughts are with them. There is still an awful lot of good in this world we live in together.

The following is a compilation of some good stuff that has been happening lately.

The spring turkey season was happening, and it was an exciting time of year to be in the woods near Elizabeth, La. Six-year-old Grayson Whitehead was about to be baptized into the world of turkey hunting.

He and his dad Jared had sat side-by-side all morning with nary a turkey in sight. As they stood and dusted themselves off to leave, a flock of turkeys made their move. Grayson followed dad’s lead, and dropped in his tracks on the spot.

A few hen yelps on the call was all it took. A mature gobbler took the bait and went into a full strut. Grayson was on point and ready for the shot he’d practiced many times before. His 20 gauge shotgun barked, and the big tom folded. A new turkey hunter was born and Dad was beaming.

It was Grayson’s day, but it was shared by the entire family. You couldn’t wipe off their smiles, and especially the smile of Grayson’s grandpa, Mark (Pops) Abel.

Toledo Bend is officially the number one lake in the good old USA. It’s a beautiful and very productive place to fish. With the spring bloom going now, catching fish is pure lagniappe.

Sheryl Janet and her hubby love to escape to their camp on the Bend. It was a beautiful, sunshine day, and the fishing was easy. This wasn’t Sheryl’s first rodeo, and she knew what to do when the fish hit. The very healthy seven-pound, three-ounce hawg in the picture was in great shape as Sheryl gently released her. What a great stress reliever!

It’s baseball season, so just pick your favorite team and cheer them on. The McNeese Cowboys are putting on a great show, with solid play against some pretty fair teams. They have notched impressive victories over LSU, Houston and UL-L. Throw in a win over Louisiana Tech, and they’ve just about got the state dominated. Get out and support your favorite team — and go Cowboys!

A knock on the back door announced my neighbor Buck. He handed me a bag of white perch that had just been caught by his son. White perch fillets are a gourmet taste delight when they’re fried crispy. They hit the grease that very night and were consumed rather quickly. Tiffany had her fair share, and life was good.

It’s acts of kindness like Buck’s that make life grand. We are all in this thing together.
