HUNTER WITHDRAWAL

It’s beginning to feel a lot like winter. Finally, the wind is full bore out of the north, and the forecast calls for cold. It’s been a long time coming, with the month of December breaking all existing records for high temperatures. Bring it on.

You know it’s extreme when your focus isn’t on staying warm, but instead surviving hordes of pesky mosquitos. For now, it’s all good, and it makes you feel like going hunting again.

Oklahoma is O.K. by Collin Cloud.  Collin accompanied his dad and head cook, Scott, on a deer hunt this 9-year-old will never forget.

Father and son were itching for a shot at a decent buck, and the rut was on. Collin was familiar with the drill from previous hunts, and it was early to bed and early to rise.

They were set up in a prime spot the old man had scoped out, and this hunt was underway. A mature buck approached, and Collin came to attention. He remembered to breathe deep and remained cool. He commenced with a sweet shot in the zone — and chalk him up for his first buck. After the shot, the adrenaline shakes never felt so good.

Louisiana isn’t exactly famous for its deer hunting prowess, but still can boast some mighty fine bucks.

James McKinney was hunkered down in the hardwoods near Campti, and the bucks were chasing with Lady Love on their minds.

A handsome trophy eight-point with high horns approached, and James went into auto pilot. The result was a magnificent, mature Louisiana buck that would make any hunter, anywhere, smile and rejoice.

Local water fowlers are hanging in there, with just enough decent hunts to keep them coming back for more. With the mild winter weather we’ve experienced this season, it’s a great accomplishment to come home with a loaded duck strap. Let’s hope this front will push some new birds south, and we can enjoy a strong finish.

Congratulations and best wishes to the McNeese football team and new head coach, Lance Guidry. He takes over the reins from Matt Viator, who has posted an impressive record that stands for itself. Cowboy fans appreciate his leadership and look forward to more of same.

Lance Guidry is a native son and bleeds the blue and gold. He has waited patiently to ascend the ladder and get his shot as a head coach. That time is now.

He was an outstanding defensive back in his playing days, and put contact back into the art of tackling. As a defensive coordinator, his teams have been aggressive and very successful in all phases. He gets them playing with abandon, but smart. We wish Coach Guidry and Coach V the best of luck, and thanks for the memories!

Cowboy nation will be watching this team develop and progress. We extend our appreciation to the hard work and dedication that it takes to put together a winning program.

Matt Viator has claimed his spot as a great head coach in a superb group of guys that laid the groundwork for success. He has succeeded at the tough job of winning on a consistent basis.

Les DeVall, Jack Doland, Ernie Duplechin and Bobby Keasler are a select group of coaches with proven records and tremendous success. Matt V. has secured his spot among these former coaches and earned his place in McNeese athletic history. We all wish him luck at UL-M (except when the Cowboys play them!).
