THE HOG MASTER

THE HOG MASTER

Man did that ever feel good!  There was a brisk north wind blowing, dropping temperatures into the 60s, with low humidity that made breathing much easier. After surviving some brutal summer heat, it was great to get some much-needed relief. Granted it’s not much, but we’ll take what we can get. Normally, after a few early fronts push through, they pave the way for more weather with a north wind push.

Football season will mercifully kick it off officially, marking the change of season. With the approach of hunting seasons, it’s a great time to be living in Louisiana.

Lacassine Reserve has produced some giant marsh bass, the majority of which are caught in early spring. But despite the heat and thick vegetation, lunker fish still have to eat.

Jason Cormier with a 10.2-pound Lacassine hawg.

Jason Cormier recently had a super trip, mostly fishing the deep canals. He put together a strong limit, with a 10.2 pound hawg of the day. This bowed-up healthy fish was an 11 easy during the spawn.

Glen and Catherine Watkins didn’t have to venture far to scratch their bass fishing itch. They hit the pond near home in Welsh — a pond appropriately named the “House Pond” — and had a great time.

Catherine hooked into something solid that turned out to be a 7.5 pound bass. Glen was smiling like he’d just won the lottery!

What does a family from Louisiana do when vacationing at Disney World?  If you guessed go bass fishing, pat yourself on the back.

The Broussard family from Jennings had a great time topping off a great vacation by catching and releasing bass. Son, Peter, caught a personal best 6.5, and Dad, Keith, followed with a giant over 9 pounds.  Dad’s 9 pushed the lake record. Leave it to some fishing Cajuns!

Gus “Boss Hog” Stacy with the fruits of his labor. This pile of hogs illustrates how he got his reputation.

The hog master is at it again. Gus Stacy is a wild hog’s worst nightmare. He’s taken a sacred oath to reduce feral hog numbers and takes it very seriously.

It’s a tall order, with the hogs’ reproducing abilities. But Gus is up to the challenge. His piercing kill call can be heard for miles, and strikes fear in every boar within hearing distance.

The hog master had set his trap near Longville, and through a sixth sense knew success was imminent. Sure enough, his trap worked like a charm, and “Boss Hog” called for reinforcement.

Kirk Manuel set the cruise for Longville ASAP. On arrival, he and Gus went to work. Gus was in his hog element, and Kirk never met a hog he could not quarter and de-bone. They made quick work of the day’s catch and will not waste a morsel.

Good eating is about the only good thing any hunter can say about wild hogs. They’re destructive to natural habitat and reproduce like, well, hogs! Left unchecked, they’ll over-populate and destroy an area before moving on. They can literally decimate your deer herd.

Please keep in mind this is only one litter of many feral hogs that need to be harvested in the worst way.

Let us join hands and say thanks to the Hog Boss and back-up Kirk Manuel for thinning the herd.
