Red Alert

Are you ready for some football? If you are football crazy, which is very normal by Louisiana standards, this is your time of the year. We’re all set for the opening kickoff and ready to get down to some serious spectating. Get out and support your favorite team; they have worked for it. Anybody who can survive August Louisiana heat in full pads certainly deserves our undivided attention and much more.

The tardy bell at school has rung, and it’s back-to-school time. Rob Prejean had to put down his fishing rods and teach high school calculus, no less. Prejean had a great summer vacation catching salt and freshwater fish. He was busy fishing a variety of spots and using many styles of fishing.  He scored a mixed bag of flounder, redfish and bass in one spot.

But for now, it’s back to those hallowed high school halls and the serious business of educating youngsters. Prejean is recharged and up to the task. He’s pictured with some absolutely giant white perch. These “slabs” represent a most memorable trip to Prejean’s secret spot. Go Gators!

Also in the photo corner is a great shot of Jack Boyer and guide, Darrell “Top Dog” Kingery, with a great speckled trout. The two had just passed a good time catching and releasing trout on a fourth-quarter trip before school started. Boyer is enrolled at McNeese for the fall semester, and Top Dog will be rooting for him.

This six-pound trout flushed the commode on a walking topwater bait, and it just doesn’t get any better with your clothes on. Kingery released the fish in a secret local saltwater estuary. It was a fitting tribute to a great summer of saltwater action. Go McNeese!

Tiffany Brandenburg loves the great outdoors we call Louisiana. Whether it’s fishing or hunting season, she’s all in. Last year, when hunting season rolled around, she was on a mission: she was bound and determined to score her very own wood duck drake.

She practiced and became proficient with a 12-gauge shotgun that will bruise your shoulder. She donned a full camouflage ensemble with matching face paint for the occasion, and headed for the woods.

Brandenburg and her hunting partner, a yellow Lab named Drake, hunkered down and waited. A beautiful woodie drake decoyed in, and both dog and hunter went on red alert. The 12-gauge bucked, and the bird folded into dense cover.

It was Drake’s time to shine, and he beelined it for the downed bird. Bradenburg held her breath as her faithful dog worked the thick brush with his nose to the ground. He circled, then abruptly stopped, with his tail wagging in double time. Bradenburg’s heart skipped a beat, and she encouraged old Drake to retrieve her bird.

He ducked deep into the grass and emerged with the woodie secured firmly. The dog trotted in proudly with his head high to all the praise an owner can shower on a pet. Brandenburg described it well — as one of the happiest memories of her life!

It’s time for football now, and hunting seasons are next up. What a great time of year! All we need is an early cool front and some heat relief. Go Saints!
