Well, you can’t say we didn’t know this was coming. It’s hotter than blazes, with temperatures steadily above 90 degrees and high humidity that will hurt you. It’s part of the package if you’ve signed up to live here in the Bayou State.

The weather this time of year can get volatile and plumb dangerous in a heartbeat. Violent thunderstorms are usually accompanied by dangerous lightning strikes and, at times, gale force winds. In short, they can produce a fisherman’s worst nightmare and turn a trip into a nightmare very quickly.

Joe Ward was fishing on Sam Rayburn Lake when he saw some very ominous storms approaching. He had 12-year-old son “Little Joe” in the back of the boat, so he wisely decided to head for the house.

His blood pressure zoomed when numerous cranks on the motor produced no fire. As the wind began to get serious, kicking up rolling white-cap waves, Joe manned the trolling motor and crossed his fingers. Little Joe secured his life jacket and tightened the straps. Dad made a straight bee line to the boat launch.

Typically, the storm didn’t last long, but the treacherous waves did their damage. Several large boats were inundated with water and barely afloat. Wisely, Joe made his move quickly as the storm worsened and avoided a near disaster.

As the wind laid over, and with the launch in sight, Joe picked up a rod and let fly with his favorite swim bait. He set the hook hard, and the trip was about to be turned around.

Little Joe had a ring-side seat and a smile on his face as he watched his old man in action.

Joe landed the bass of the day and the trip was transformed in one cast from the potential fishing trip from hell to a day neither he nor his son will ever forget.

It was a lazy Sunday, and Rob Prejean knew just what to do. His daughter Candace naturally knew the drill, and this fishing trip was on go.

It was a great day to drown some shiners, and Rob was on some super-sized white perch.

Fishing a secret lake in central Louisiana was going to provide some special father/daughter time. The shiners were lively, and the perch were aggressive, making for a fine day — Louisiana style.

The Prejeans were all over the beautifully marked, blue-green, iridescent fish. And there would, in fact, be a bodacious fish fry in their very near future. Never has there been a better tasting, more crispy fillet!

Rob was edged out for big fish honors and couldn’t have been happier. Candace paid close attention when Dad put on his fishing 101 class. She was a standout student, and as a result, scored a healthy white perch slab pushing 3 pounds. This is why fishing is such a great sport.

Take necessary precautions as the summer heat bears down. Hydrate yourself. And from here on out it’s early or late fishing adventure or risk heat stroke.

When you’re hot you’re hot! Aaron Bertrand beat the heat recently on two successive nights on Toledo Bend. He took first place honors in a Friday night tournament and backed it up with another solid bunch of bass Saturday night. His big bass weighed in at 7 1/2 pounds and put the icing on it!

Happy fishing!
