Petos Pork Dish I wanted to give a little shout out to Peto’s in Moss Bluff for always being a good go-to lunch option when I am in the Bluff. Moss Bluff has almost all the fast-food options covered, but there are only a couple of good places to get a good plate lunch or a fresh burger.

Peto’s has never let me down, and I’ve been in more times than I can count. It’s funny; I always seem to be near there when I realize that I haven’t stopped for lunch yet, so I swing in and grab something. There really is never any wait — even when there are several people there.

Well, I stopped in the other day and I grabbed the pork roast plate lunch with black-eyed peas and rice and gravy. Now, I’ve had pork roast cooked more ways than should be legal; and some are the same and some are not; and I wasn’t sure that this one was so much different than any I had before. It was just that it was a really good lunch that was cooked the way it should have been. The price was a bargain for the amount of food I got. I’m not a little guy, and I couldn’t eat it all.

Be sure to stop in and show some love. On a personal note, Peto Sellers’ son Kody will be getting married soon. I wanted to congratulate him and his wonderful fiancé Ashley Rudd on their upcoming wedding.

China One

4437 Nelson Road • Lake Charles 477-3338

I’ve always said that Jack Wong had the best Chinese food in Lake Charles, and that I think he for sure had the best egg rolls. I’ve missed not getting to eat his amazing food since he closed down.

My friend Garrett had been telling me about the place called China One. So we stopped in for lunch the other day.

The very first thing I noticed was how clean the place was. I’m not talking about wiped-down clean, but a sense that this place has always been kept clean, which makes for a very relaxing feeling when you’re dining.

I ordered the General Tso’s Chicken and vegetable fried rice with egg rolls and fried pot stickers to start. First off, I thought the pot stickers were going to be pan-fried, but in fact, they were fully fried. I’d never had them that way, and boy they were sure good.

The egg roll was a smash. I’d recommend them to anyone.

The fried rice was full of vegetables — not just one or two, but at least six different items in the rice. It had carrots, snow peas, baby corn, broccoli, mushroom and water chestnuts.

The chicken was extremely tender. I’m not a white meat fan because white meat never gets as tender as dark. But this white meat was. And it tasted fresh, not frozen. The batter was nice and consistent and the sauce was sweet with a little kick on the back side.

I was very surprised I had not been here sooner. But I will be back for sure. I want everyone to get out there and give them a shot.

Every day I drive around and see little places that seem to have been there forever but I can’t for the life of me remember ever seeing them. This is exciting to me, as it means we have more places to check out.

I have an idea for a food truck trailer park in Lake Charles. It would have six or so different trucks in it serving varied cuisine that you might not get on a regular basis. I’ve spoken with owners of several local restaurants who loved the idea of having a food truck representing them. Give me any feedback you may want to offer as to whether you think SWLA is ready for something like this. Contact me by email: machete120407@yahoo.com.
