It’s Good To Be The King

For Lagniappe’s Best of 2021 — the magazine’s 28th annual Reader’s Choice Awards — the theme was “It’s Good To Be The King.” Portraying the King — he was actually called King Kane I for the article — in dozens of photographs was Kane Mitchell, who is the banking center manager of the Red River Bank branch located on Beglis Parkway in Sulphur.

This cover, shot by Chris Brennan at the Lake Charles Country Club,  was voted by Lagniappe staff as our all-time favorite cover.

The king’s throne was contributed by Roby Dyer and his crown and scepter were loaned by Susan Blevins. Tommy Navarra of Navarra’s Jewelry provided the king’s bling and other accessories.

Food for the series of photos of the hungry king was provided by Casa Mañana, Darrell’s, Big Daddy’s, Nina P’s, B&O Kitchen & Grocery, Seafood Palace, Ultimate Experience, 121 Artisan Bistro, Crust Pizza and Southern Spice, each of whom won a Best Of Award in a category.

Readers will note that the king’s crown, scepter, throne and bling all look as if they are made of gold. So does the table at which he sits. In fact, the table was covered with a large golden cloth which was extensively decorated by dozens of metallic, gold, coin-sized circles that were attached to it. These circular pieces did a fine job of reflecting all the light generated by the photo shoot, and thus creating the look of glistening gold.

Props for the photos were provided by the Lake Charles Country Club.

Among the many images in the long, two-part Best Of spread were shots of the king holding up his scepter in a variety of positions, cradling a pile of cracklins in his hands, putting two pieces of fried catfish into his mouth at once, eating a beignet from a three-tiered display while blowing powdered sugar all over the set, wearing a bunch of onion rings on his fingers as if they were real rings, showing astonishment at the number of toppings on a pizza, gazing lovingly at a Darrell’s Special, and going into a state of euphoria as he smelled the aroma of a chicken-fried steak smothered in gravy.
