Check it out! The youth hunt for whitetail deer opened recently, kicking off the season in Kansas just in time.

Kevin Reed and his 15-year-old hunting protégé Carter packed up and headed west. They were hunting on public lands planted mostly in soybeans and alfalfa. It was on!

The buck they wanted entered the big field well out of rifle range. Kevin and Carter would have to close the distance for a shot opportunity. Hay bales dotted the field, so it was time to get sneaky. This was right up these Louisiana boys’ sleeve, so they hunkered down and made their move.

When you sneak past other deer in the field, you can run the risk of spooking the whole herd. In this case, the two hunters slowly but surely advanced on the buck. Once they eased by several lesser, unsuspecting bucks, their target buck was finally in range.

Carter had already scored a strapping Kansas doe for a warm-up and was cool with this shot. He put a stone cold shot on a very healthy six-point buck that hadn’t been missing many meals. Chalk one up for the Cajun deer squad.

It’s a great time of year, with the change of seasons and hunters everywhere toeing the mark. Dove season kicked it off recently with few birds but plenty of heat.

Teal season is up next, with plenty of flooded rice fields available to the birds. Recent rains have topped out fields and scattered the flocks all over.

We are on the verge of archery season for whitetail deer. Hunters are still waiting for a cool blast of air from the west to hold down a healthy mosquito population. Pray for an early cool front, and don’t forget the mosquito juice.

The fishermen left casting are of the very hardcore variety in this God-awful heat. Seth Sibille braved high temps and humidity on a recent trip to Lacassine Reserve. He worked the thick lily pads and earned himself a nice bass limit. The explosion of the day went off as he worked the pads for a giant eight-pound, eight-ounce marsh hawg.

Ten-year-old Maddie Caire was fishing at Highland Lake in Baton Rouge when the bass hit. She was working a sparkled beetle spin just like her dad Chris taught her. After the widespread flooding, it felt good to catch a break and have some fun. There’s nothing like catching a nice bass to ease the pain!

A shout out to coach Lance Guidry and the McNeese Cowboys football team and congratulations for a first win. The Cowboys put on a great show and local athletic supporters are pumped up. Bring on the games, and thank you, Lord — football season is here!

The proposed ban concerning the transportation of deer across state lines has been shelved until March. At that time, new laws will be considered. It’s a reprieve at least for now. We’ll jump off that next bridge when we get to it.

Pick your favorite team and get out to support them. After sweating through some scorching heat, they certainly deserve the recognition. Get on board and show the players some love for all their hard work and preparation.

Go McNeese!
