Catching Fish Is Lagniappe

The spring spawn is just about finis. But by no means has the fat lady sung for local anglers. There are still some good fish to be caught, if you can just figure them out.

To prove that point, Phillip Whittington scored a post-spawn 8-pound, 3-ounce hawg in Lacassine Reserve recently. As the weather heats up, and the vegetation gets very “tick”-like, the Cajun said, the effective fishermen will adjust to ever-changing conditions.

A deluge of frequent spring rains has topped out most local fishing hot spots, making the fish active and well-fed. As weather conditions stabilize with a general warming trend, the bass action should improve.

Eain Boone is going with the flow, and has switched gears in Lacassine. After a productive spring bass season, he is now all over trophy-sized bream. He has targeted areas that are producing fillet-sized bream and plenty of them. Eain was smiling all the way to the frying pan.

High water and low salinity levels have made it tough on our saltwater brethren. Speckled trout action has been spotty, but redfish picking up the slack ain’t all that bad!

But as soon as the water gets right, saltwater die-hards should be in for a great year. Sooner rather than later, the worm will turn.

It has been banner fishing season already for 12-year-old angler Keagan Trimm. This youngster has found his calling and loves his fishing time. He frequents several local waterways near his home in Sulphur. In his spare time, he will be found at any of several favorite hot spots close by.

This young angler put his new baits to good use on a recent trip. He fought and landed a solid 4-pound bass that made Grandma smile.

There are a lot of options for youngsters nowadays for their recreational time off. Some activities are very positive, and others not so good. The choices these youngsters make will sometimes affect the rest of their lives.

Fishing has to be very high on the list of desirable ways to spend one’s leisure time. It is worth the effort just to get you outside and in the middle of all Mother Nature has to offer. Catching fish is lagniappe, and the fish fry later is like gravy.

Fishing is for a lifetime. Young or old; perhaps fishing together; it’s guaranteed to be an adventure every trip.

Football has wrapped up another spring season and anticipation for the real deal is amping up. McNeese closed its spring season under head coach Lance Guidry. The spring season spells contact, and the Cowboys got a good dose. Guidry’s got them attacking, and local fans are psyched and ready.

As a player, Guidry was a hellacious tackler. He expects no less from his players. This fall football season can’t get here quickly enough for the Cowboy Blue and Gold faithful. Go Cowboys!

Darrin Hoffpauir recently bagged a beautiful limit of specklebelly geese both on an outstanding morning near Thornwell.
