PERTO BOWL; LOGGERHEADS

PERTO BOWL; LOGGERHEADS

I’ve been reviewing burgers for close to six months now, and I’ve had some really impressive burgers. I’ve also had some that were just burgers; there was not really much to say about them.

But I haven’t come across any bad ones as of yet. I’m a simple person when it comes to burgers. I feel a “true” burger has no more than two patties; your standard set-up (lettuce, tomato and onion); and a few other garnishes that tie it all together (cheese, bacon, egg, etc.). The burger should be able to be held without everything falling out of it and not so large that you can’t put your mouth around it.

Now, I’m sure some of these “mountain burgers,” as I like to call them, taste great, but they’re more of a shock-and-awe type of creation that can’t even be completely eaten due to their size. To me that doesn’t fit into a true burger contest.

I’m sure that not everyone will agree with the way I feel about burgers or even the way I review restaurants in our area. But the great thing about this country is we are all entitled to our opinions. And that’s all I write about — my opinions. That being said, please just take my reviews for what they are — and that is simply a man who loves food and his community and gives his opinions about both.

Petro Bowl

Petro Bowl

Now, let’s get down to business and talk about burgers. A while back, we took Mac bowling at Petro Bowl. While we were there, we decided to grab a bite to eat. So I’m standing there, looking at the food board, and I’m grabbing several things for us to snack on while Mac is being recruited to join a bowling league at the age of two. I decided to grab a double cheeseburger and give it a shot.

The bun was just a normal hamburger bun that probably came from Evangeline Maid, and the burger looked just like the ones we used to get from the original Vincent Settlement Elementary out in Carlyss when I was a kid. I’m ordering a burger at a bowling alley, so I had no real expectations of it being a great burger. But as long as it wasn’t bad, I was going to be fine with it.

To my surprise, the burger was very good and one I would have again. The meat was extremely juicy. The hamburger patties were not shaped as if they had been frozen, and were definitely thicker than any frozen patties I’ve ever seen; so I figured the cooks must be making their own patties.

This is the type of burger you would make yourself on a Sunday afternoon in the backyard. And that’s what a burger is about for me — sitting around the backyard with friends eating burgers and drinking a cold one on a hot afternoon.

Now, this next burger I’m going to talk about is my hands-down favorite at this point in the burger challenge. I’ve eaten this burger more than a dozen times. I even wanted one so bad that I went on a Friday evening by myself to have one, and anyone who knows me knows I hate to eat alone in a restaurant.

Loggerheads

Loggerheads

So I ordered the Bacon, Cheddar and Jalapeno Burger from Loggerheads. Now, this isn’t a specific burger on the menu. I just order the cheeseburger, and then add the bacon and jalapenos. However, it should have its own place on the menu.

Under Jim’s watchful eye, the staff prepare all their meats to his specifications. That’s a damn good seasoned piece of beef that I can’t ever seem to get enough of.

Again, this is a pretty tame burger in regards to its simplicity, but it packs such a punch of flavor that when you’re done eating it, you sure wish there were more, even though you’re so full you couldn’t eat anymore.

I don’t care if you live in south Lake Charles — it’s more than worth the trip to Loggerheads to give this amazing burger a try. Also, there’s always some live music to listen to, as well as the beautiful river scenery to look at.

I know that I write about food and am in no way a journalist, so please excuse me if this rambles. But I just wanted to say something of a personal nature.

lsp1 SWLA lost Senior Trooper Steven Vincent while he was performing his duties for the Louisiana State Police. The way this area embraced this officer and his family during this terrible situation really made me proud to be from this SWLA. Everyone wanted to be involved in some way to show support — from people standing on 171 collecting donations to the Seven Slot Society of SWLA holding a fundraiser and family day, with all proceeds going to officer Vincent’s family.

The men in blue risk their lives on a daily basis, and we as normal citizens really have no idea of the sacrifice they make for us to be able to feel safe in the world we live in. There are bad apples who have created conflict between police and citizens. But it’s abundantly clear that Vincent was a true asset to this community, and his loss will be felt for some time.

Thank you, sir, for all that you did for us. Even though I never had the privilege of meeting you, I feel it will be very hard to forget you after the display of love this community has shown you.

If you get a moment and the opportunity presents itself, take the time to thank an officer for the sacrifice he makes protecting us and the sacrifice his family makes in supporting him. All lives matter.
