BLUE MOON

BLUE MOON

When you venture outside, it’s like a blanket of thermal heat engulfs you. This is the hard-core summertime heat Louisiana is known for. Daytime temps right now are pegging out in the high 90s and you can feel it all over.

The good news is we are on the downside of the summer heat. An early “faux” cool front is approaching, and hopefully will clear the way for additional early fronts to follow suit. The wind is out of the north as we speak, and thank you Lord for small favors!

It’s an exciting time of year, as all loyal to Louisiana get ready for some football. Players are reporting for summer camp, ready and wanting to hit the field in just a few weeks. Bless their souls and more power to them as the heat bears down. Everyone in these parts is looking forward with great anticipation for their favorite teams to tee it up.

The month of July had two full moons, and proved to be a great time to catch a fish of a lifetime. A select few local fishermen will never forget the “blue moon” of July, 2015.

Ben Barto got it kicked off with a giant bass weighing in at 8 pounds, 10 ounces. On the same early full moon, Ryan Melancon did his thing with a 9.61 pound Toledo personal best.

Fishing the second moon of the month, Trey Brown scored a 9-pound, 5-ounce Toledo Bend hawg. Sean Kennon followed with an 11-pound, 5-ounce Toledo giant that certainly qualifies as a fish of a lifetime. The full moon never fails to produce in a very big way, and night time provides some much-needed heat relief.

The north wind has blown away the muggies and the Gulf beaches are a nice place to be. Josh Johnson and crew hit the beach and the water was primo. They stroked beaucoup beautiful Gulf speckled trout with some bull redfish for lagniappe.

Bob Vilyus scored the speck of the day and his personal best, weighing in at more than 6 pounds.

When the water is right, the Gulf beaches can provide some sweet saltwater action second to none.

Hunting seasons will mercifully be on us before you know it, and there is nothing like being prepared. It’s a good time to take inventory and put in some sweat equity for the coming seasons.

The time is now to take care of maintenance on the duck blind or refurbish your favorite deer stands. Safety should be the guiding principle, followed closely by comfort. Any pruning or trimming to provide clear shooting lanes can be done now. But beware of insects and varmints. Be equipped with an ample supply of bug spray and saturate the area before going in. Twenty feet up in a tree is not the most opportune place to encounter red wasps, or even worse, hornets!

It’s an exciting time of the year for our many faithful sports fans and outdoor enthusiasts. Whether it’s football, hunting or both, it’s good to be living the good life in Louisiana, aptly known as Sportsman’s Paradise. Gear up for hunting season, and please support your local teams. Go McNeese, and support our Cowboys!!!
