GALVESTON

GALVESTON

Chelsea and I were recently invited to the Lone Star Rally by my friend Seth Vincent. I knew for sure that I was going to see more bikes than I would believe would fit on Galveston Island, and I knew there would be lots of beer. What I did not expect was to find such a good dinner with amazingly fast service, but it seems The Spot on Galveston’s seawall has it all.

The Spot happens to be in a larger facility called Island Famous. There are four other locations inside the building, all attached. There is Sidebar, which has the feel like you and your friends are hanging at a house on the beach. It offers all types of refreshing drinks served in mason jars, as well as a unique selection of Texas brewed beer. There are also games and hammock swings.

There’s also the Tiki Bar, and it has an island hut feel to it. They have over 50 different beers, with all their craft beers being from Texas, as well as margaritas and their signature Pina Coladas.

The Rum Shack is a tropical drink paradise with a drink menu dedicated to mojitos and rum drinks. It also has a nice selection of island beers from Argentina, Brazil and Honduras, as well as several other imports.

Then there was Squeeze, a Tequila bar with tons of different margaritas. If you’re just a straight-up shooter, they have you covered with all the top shelf tequila you can think of.

The only location we went into was The Spot. The place was packed, with all the people in town for the rally. The line at the order counter was moving quickly, but I just assumed that they would take your order quickly, but then have you waiting for a long time because of all the orders they were working on.

I ordered the blackened bleu burger, which for me is a true go-to burger, if it is done correctly. The burger came with waffle fries. We ordered the Spot sampler, and it came with hot wings, shrimp kisses, seafood-stuffed jalapenos and frickles (fried pickles).

I had only had about half my beer when the buzzer for my order went off. I was really shocked at how short of a wait it was; I even asked the lady at the counter how they were getting the orders out so fast. She just said that’s what they do.

The fried pickles were very crisp, and not greasy at all. The seafood-stuffed jalapenos were my favorite item, because most places don’t use seafood when they stuff jalapenos. I liked the different twist.

The burger came on a butter bun, which never hurts, and the bacon was nice and crisp — but not to the point where it was gritty. The part that always makes or breaks a great bacon bleu is how strong the bleu cheese is. Bleu cheese is my favorite cheese on a burger, and even I have found some that are very offensive to the taste. This one was very smooth, with just enough bite on the back end to make you nod your head in satisfaction.

The waffle fries were amazing. I normally just eat my fries without ketchup, but these were meant to be dipped, and dipped they were.
