Bobcat Lake

Bobcat Lake

It sure is sweet when your best laid plans come together. Bobby George had a dream, and it has now become a reality.

He envisioned a place out in the country where his family could enjoy all the simple pleasures Mother Nature has to offer; a place the grandchildren could visit and get out and enjoy the great outdoors. Don’t forget to leave the iPads at home!

Bob and soul mate Cathy paid their dues living on the main street in the north Louisiana metropolis of Simmsboro. They invested in some prime piney woods land so that the old man would at least have a place to hunt. The rest is history.

This was a prime spot for a pond; so, naturally, Bob set about the task of creating one. He dug a 2 1/2 acre lake with suitable depth for beaucoup fish.

The next phase included stocking it with plentiful bass and forage fish.

Once the fish began to flourish, it was all catch and release. The plan was in motion.

The next phase was the biggie.  Bobby, AKA “Bobcat,” envisioned their dream home as being in an idyllic country setting and produced the blueprints to prove it. Unbeknownst to the family, he went to work. He did leak the plan to Will, and his grandson swore to secrecy.

Amazingly the 12-year-old kept his word throughout. Bobby covered their tracks, telling the clan he was having a mobile home moved in, and all the while Will was cool.

It was, at last, time for the unveiling, and grandpa was beside himself.  The whole family was invited up to check out the “mobile home.”  Just as intended, the family was shocked and in awe when they pulled up to the dream house. The priceless look on everyone’s face made the effort worthwhile, and you couldn’t have covered their smiles up with a backhoe. This was the type of surprise that just keeps on giving.

The main specification for the house, of course, was to be situated with a good view of the local deer herd. Right on cue, breakfast always tastes better when you can gather at the picture window and observe wild deer feeding.

Also, the five-year-old pond was about to lose its virginity. Armed with rods, reels and plenty of tackle, the Georges assaulted the lake en masse.  The fish were cooperative and everyone got a taste of the excitement. Bobcat Lake (very appropriately named) was christened.

Will was in the angler of the day and in the zone. He scored the hawg of the day with a 23-inch bass that made the trip complete. Anybody who could keep a secret like he did deserved it.

The family filleted enough fish for a bodacious fish fry to top off a great day. Fresh fish never tasted so good. Grandpa knew just how to cook them crispy.

This is why people work hard and squirrel away savings for their retirement. It’s essential to try to leave a better place for the next generation. It is fulfilling and satisfying to see the fruits of your labor bearing fruit.

Bob George is a decorated Vietnam veteran and served hard time for our country. He deserves these good things in life and is now getting some payback. God bless the USA and all the little Georges.

Football and hunting seasons are mercifully right around the corner. It’s a fine time to be living large in Louisiana!
