MONGOLIAN HOUSE

MONGOLIAN HOUSE

I’ve been to the Mongolian House once before, with Chelsea and my sister, and we had a very good experience, so I decided to return to do a review.

We went to dinner around 5:30 pm, and the place was just starting to fill up. As we had our son, Mac, with us, we wanted a table that wasn’t right in the middle of everything, so the nice hostess found us the perfect table. The staff was very friendly, and there was a very upbeat vibe that was quite refreshing.

I’m always nervous when I eat at Mongolian grills, due to the fact that the raw meats are sitting in pans with only the bottoms of the pans chilled. With that being said, I never once felt nervous here; the meats all looked very fresh, and they looked that way the first time we ate here, as well, so they show some consistency.

We started the meal with a couple of house rolls; we got the Tony roll, and the Chicken Roll. Chelsea left me the duties of getting our Mongolian grill together. The Tony Roll was tuna, crab and avocado, rolled, dipped in tempura, and fried, then topped with their house sauce. This is not something I would normally get, but we were very pleased with it. The tempura was cooked perfectly. The Chicken Roll was fried then rolled, and it was topped with a teriyaki-type sauce that was a nice complement.  mongolian house1

For the Mongolian grill, I decided to go with chicken and sausage as my meats. I then added broccoli, peanuts, onions, bean sprouts, water chestnuts, jalapenos and onions. I added two sauces, but I must admit I never remember the sauces I use. I usually just taste the sauces until I get the ones that I think will work with my choices, and I must admit I did knock this one right out of the park.

This place is a real treat, and I strongly suggest people get out there and try it.

We have a lot of new places here in Lake Charles. We have many that have been here for a long time, and they’ve survived with the help of strong, loyal support. This is a great time to be in SWLA if you love food. We have so many great chefs, like Chad Jackson of  the Lake Charles Country Club, Sammi Chloun of Toga Grill and Brian Pitre of Jam Good Jellies, to name a few. They’re creating some of the area’s best food. Get out and try the food our area has to offer. And get out of your own way when it comes to food; the worst that will happen when you try something new is that you don’t like it. Then again, you may be surprised, and find your new favorite dish.

After 20 years of being in the food industry, I’ve seen things that chefs always want to talk about, but can’t, because of fear of lost business. Well, I finally get to say these things.

The first thing I want to address is children in restaurants. People always said I would feel differently when I had kids, and after having Mac, I still feel the same way. I feel every parent should be able to take their children to whatever restaurant they want to, and the label of a kid-friendly restaurant basically means that these are places  where your kids can run wild.

Here is the fact, though: If you can’t, won’t or don’t care to control your child in a restaurant, and your children are disturbing other people who are eating, then it is intrusive. Your comfort or convenience should not come at the cost of ruining the dinner of someone who doesn’t have kids with them. If your kids behave this way at home, that’s fine, because it’s your home, but that doesn’t mean it’s acceptable in public.

Also, if you allow your kids to play with the sugar caddies, and throw the sweeteners on the floor and the table, it is your responsibility to clean that up. Wait staff doesn’t make  baby-sitter wages, and they shouldn’t be expected to clean up after your children.

Be kind to people in the food industry. It’s a tough business.
