My buddy Jerrett Overmyer left the cooking profession for a while. He was working at Stine in Lake Charles when an opportunity for him to get back into the kitchen came in the form of the Bad Apple Saloon. Jerrett was given the chance to head up their kitchen, and to bring this area some of his tasty creations.

Jerrett was originally associated with Twisted Cooks, but this place seems to be a better fit for him.

Unless a bar has a food menu, Chelsea and I don’t generally go to it, because we’re not the biggest of drinkers. But we love to eat, so when we can, we can knock two birds out with one stone.

The menu at The Bad Apple is full of exciting choices, but we decided to check out the tacos and a burger. For the burger, we decided to go with the Texas toast, bacon, pepper jack, cheddar and a fried egg to top it off. We got an order of fries, and the waitress suggested that we get the garlic butter on them, which we did.

First off, the egg was perfect, with just enough yolk running to spread it around the burger, but not so runny that it was an outright mess. The burger was nice and juicy, and the bacon was crisp — and who really likes flimsy bacon? To my surprise, the Texas toast held the burger together perfectly.

The fries, with the garlic butter, were a home run. This is one of those dishes that you lock down in your memory vault as a true highlight. This combination is something I will make sure and stop by and get again.

Our second dish was just a simple beef taco, served with some fried green beans. I know it seems an odd combo, but nobody has ever accused me of being in any way normal.

The meat on the taco was seasoned on-point, and there was no effort to recreate the wheel. They just make a really good beef taco on a flour tortilla, and that’s all they need to do, because who doesn’t love a good taco?

The fried green beans were fried to crispiness, and I love green beans any way you can cook them. I guess the old adage is true — everything is better fried.

We have several bars in our area that serve food — not just bar food, but a menu with some actual creativity to it. I must say Jerrett and the crew from The Bad Apple Saloon can add their names right up there at the top of the list.

The bar had a very cozy feel to it, and the staff was super friendly. You didn’t get that “outsider” feeling because you weren’t one of the regulars; they just treated you like you came in every day.

If you are anywhere near Ryan St., make sure to swing by, grab a bite and have a cold one. This is a win-win situation for you. They will soon be on Waitr App, too, so you can get it to go.
