Chelsea suggested we check out a little spot called The Bekery that she’d heard about.

The first thing I was impressed by was the outside patio with the great fire pit that was all lit up. There was also a cute lounge area where people can just relax and enjoy a pretty morning or any time of the day. The patio had a very private feel to it, but at the same time, it didn’t feel closed off.

We walked in, and I fell in love with how cute and comfortable the place felt. It had a real old world bakery feel to it. The wire covers over the lights and the metal panels on the roof gave it an older style of design. But it still felt very modern as well.

Chelsea and I only picked a couple of things, but they were good picks. We ordered the spinach, tomato and feta quiche and the boudin king cake. Now, when we ordered the king cake, the server asked if we wanted some pepper jelly. Well, since I’ve never known pepper jelly to make anything taste bad, I didn’t see how I was going to go wrong.

The quiche was perfect; it held together and didn’t fall apart like so many do. The combination of flavors had a nice, smooth taste to it. But the feta jumped out as the dominant flavor. That was by design I’m sure, because the feta’s boldness really brought the entire dish together. This was definitely a “two thumbs up” kind of quiche.

The king cake was a no-brainer — I suppose because we love boudin and king cake, and therefore it makes sense to combine the two. I mean, someone decided to combine peanut butter and jelly, and look how well that turned out.

First of all, the dough in the king cake could have been eaten as it was without anything else. But adding that great boudin and dipping the cake in that pepper jelly was like having a flavor bomb go off in your mouth. I didn’t ask whether the boudin was made in house. But regardless, whoever is making it should be proud of their skills.

While we were inside, I was listening to all the customers talk about their food. That might be perceived as “hear hustling,” and that would be a correct assessment. But when you can’t try everything yourself, what better way is there to get people’s real feelings about the food?

What was consistent in all the conversations was that the diners all loved Rebekah Hoffpauir’s creation. Her croissants are fresh-baked croissants; she makes the breakfast sandwiches, scones, muffins, cookies, cakes, brownies and even the gelato. It’s hard for me to talk on an even playing field with a pastry chef because I just don’t bake enough to do anything more than listen to them.

This little spot is truly a diamond in the Lake Charles food scene. Even though its not on the main drag, it’s more than worth the drive from anywhere you live. Trust me, because I came from the Bluff to check it out, and would be more than happy to do so again.
