The Payoff

Old Man Winter has finally arrived. Louisiana is finally bracing for a real arctic cold front that should cool us down below freezing.

If you enjoy hunting, it couldn’t have occurred any sooner. Break out those long John skivvies and bundle up; it’s time to put on your hunting boots.

Matt Byrley

Matt Byrley

Louisiana born-and-bred Matt Byrley was bound and determined to score a Kansas buck worthy of mounting. He was on a mission to close the distance on a bruiser Midwest buck.

Matt spent many hours in the stand and paid his just dues for just one chance — and the payoff was about to come true. He spotted a monster buck hot on a doe’s trail. The buck crossed a field, and moments later crossed back over. It was time to make a move, and Matt sprang into action. He hustled out to a small hill overlooking the field and perched himself for a good view. It was on!

Like clockwork, the doe began to cross again, with the buck on her heels. Both were headed straight for Matt’s position, and he knocked an arrow. The buck stopped broadside at the base of the hill, and Matt let one fly.

He made a good enough shot, but this big buck wasn’t nearly done in yet. Matt and several hound dogs blood-trailed this Kansas giant in a meandering half-mile circle. The buck ended up at the same location where he’d originally been stuck.

At the end of the elusive blood trail was a tremendous 13-point buck with distinctive horns. Byrley was as happy as a Cajun bow hunter can get with all his clothes on!

There’s nothing that compares with the rush that comes with a hunter’s first buck with a bow. It’s by no means an easy task.

Preston Compton loves his leisure time in the field in pursuit of whitetail deer. His 14-year-old son, Peyton, shares the same passion.

The young hunter hit the woods near his home in Fenton very regularly, and had a severe case of buck itch. With the parents’ permission, he was determined to bag his first buck and was prepared to put in his time. Persistence pays off, and lo and behold, a deer hunter was born. All his efforts were paid off with Peyton’s pinpoint shot on his first buck. This was a day he’ll always cherish and remember. It sure felt fine to scratch that itch! rocketuxedo-duck-hunt

Featured in the photo corner of this edition is a fine wedding group that comes by their hunting heritage honestly. The big day was the marriage celebration of Olivia Khoury, and the lucky guy was Brent Moss. Olivia’s dad was the late Daryl Khoury, who was an all-around great guy and a very effective and dedicated duck hunter. The apples don’t fall too far from the tree.

The wedding party honored him with an after-wedding duck hunt to celebrate. Olivia’s brother Chris presented the newlyweds with matching Benelli shotguns.

Decked out in tuxes, the groomsmen passed a great after-wedding hunt. Only in Louisiana!
