Something Good To Cheer About

The good news is football season is mercifully here at last. Good God Almighty, it is here at last!

It has been a typically brutal summer, and everyone is ready for a change of season. Louisiana has more than its fair share of football junkies who’ve been waiting impatiently to kick it off. Les bon temp roule!

Having just endured one of the worst floods in history, Louisiana residents will be ready for something good to cheer about. We witnessed the devastation as Baton Rouge dealt with the misery of flooded homes. We were on a mission to deliver sheetrock to loved ones to begin the agonizingly slow rebuilding process.

It brought back memories of the destruction from hurricanes we will never forget. The piles of waterlogged debris stacked in front yards was stark evidence of the scope of the damage done. The hot, putrid air smelled of rotting food and dead fish.

Louisiana showed its colors as citizens flocked to the stricken areas to offer a helping hand anyway they could.

There have been some tremendous acts of kindness from complete strangers in a time of need. Small mom and pop makeshift food operations have popped up, offering a hot bowl of jambalaya at no charge. Tearing-out and construction crews have shown up and have helped to ease some of the homeowners’ pain and suffering. It’s times like these that make you proud to be a part of the human race. Long live Louisiana!

As if we didn’t have enough on our plate already, the Louisiana State Wildlife Commission forges ahead to enact laws concerning the transportation of animal carcasses across state lines. The proposed changes could adversely affect many citizens who are financially dependent on processing the various deer potentially affected by wasting disease. Concerned sportsmen, taxidermists and meat processors showed up in force for a local meeting to voice their concerns. The trickle-down effect from these proposed restrictions would be a huge hit to Louisiana’s already depleted economy.

Archery season is scheduled to open in less than a month. So, could the powers that be have waited any longer to spring their possibly life-altering plans? It reeks of a knee-jerk reaction to a disease that originated in Colorado more than 40 years ago. Contact officials and let your concerns be known.

In the photo corner is an awesome deer just harvested in sweet home Louisiana. That is a world-class buck taken at Tensas Wildlife Management Area by Oakdale resident Johnny Willis. This buck’s horns measured over 147 inches with a 22-inch inside spread. God bless Louisiana!

Pray for an early cool front and get out and support your chosen football program. The players and coaches deserve the respect and admiration of their fans for surviving the summer heat and preparing themselves to put on a first-class show. There is nothing like playing before a packed house to show them some love.

Go McNeese and go to hell UL-L! (But, wishing you the best in your flood recovery!)
