MY GUY’S BETTER DAN YOUR GUY

Me an’ my fran Max went to a Republican Roundtable gadderin’ at de Harlequin. De folks what wuz on de panel had a buncha experience at holdin’ forums like dis. Up on de Panel wuz former state Rep. Vic Stelly, American Press editor Jim Beam, Baton Rouge talk show host Moon Griffon  and Calcasieu Parish Clerk of Court Lynn Jones.

To say de discussion wuz spirited would  be a gross understatement. Me, I taught I wuz at a duck camp supper with a wild booray game goin’ on.

De Calcasieu Parish election returns wuz discussed first. Event  organizer — a contributor to dis publication an’ a former McNeese professor — Mike Kurth showed de numbers by PowerPoint charts. De question wuz why jus’ a little mo dan 30 percent voted in de October election an’ what haz to be done to get mo folks to vote Republican in de upcomin’ runoff. Remember, I tol’ you at de beginnin’ dis wuz a Republican Roundtable.

It wuz pointed out dat negative ads had probably turned a lot of people off. An’ me, I got to agree wit’ dat. As mentioned in previous articles,  dem PACs iz headed by lawyers, an’ all day know how to do iz attack, an’ dat means nasty commercials.

Some sed de lower turnout wuz such because folks didn’t have a whole lot to vote for. Me, I agree wit’ dat, an’ de fact iz, folks who’ve seen de races day had interest in decided will shore not vote de second time. So you will have probably have no mo dan a 20 percent turnout de second go-round.

It wuz also pointed out dat negative ads dat would have never made it on TV were seen all over de social media, where anybody can say anyting about candidates an’ dar supporters … in udder words, Poogy Moti-style politics. Poogy wuz a  candidate in de ’70s who got in races simply to attack whoever he wuz paid to attack. Edwin Edwards wuz hiz favorite target.

De runoff election is set for Nov. 21. Be shore to vote early if you’ll be tied up on de 21st. News media will have details on when an’ where to vote.

Folks, a turnout uf 20 percent would be a shame. We urge you to go vote an’ have a say on who runs our state and parish for de next four years. Dar’s nuttin’ dat upsets me mo dan to hear someone say day didn’t vote or aren’t registered. An’ dat’s de folks dat usually complain de loudest about local or state gubment.

So, come rain or shine, do yourself an’ your children a favor an’ vote. It’s a short ballot, an’ it won’t take you long. If you don’t have a ride, jus’ look in de paper; all sorts uf candidates are offerin’ free rides to de polls, so don’t use dat az an excuse. Vote … you’ll be proud dat you did.

Big Elections Will Be On De Ballot

We will have udder stuff dan de governor’s race to vote for on dat Nov. 21 ballot. It will have some important elections. Baton Rouge Mayor Kip Holden will battle south Louisiana politician Billy Nungesser for lt. governor. Dis one iz important to our area. De lt. governor iz responsible for promotin’ travel an’ tourism … which iz why Jay Dardeene did so well in our area.

De udder statewide race has Buddy Caldwell, de incumbent state D.A., facin’ Jeff Landry. Now Landry did a whole lot uf attackin’ de firs’ round. Caldwell pretty much shut him up when he had a whole buncha district attorneys and sheriffs appear on his commercial. Dat one should be real hot.

An’ uf course, locally we have a very hot race between state Rep. A.B. Franklin and former state Rep. and District Judge Wilfred Carter. Carter led by a few percentage points de firs’ go-round: 38 to 34 to be exact. Former City Judge Tom Quirk had 18 percent, an will probably have a lot to say about who wins dat race for District 34 state representative.

We also have three Police Jury races still undecided. De District 2 Police Jury race will see Calvin Collins and Diana Ross face off. In de District 3 Police Jury, Shelly Mayo will face Eddie Earl Lewis, Jr. An’ District 10 incumbent Tony Stelly will face Shalon Latour. All de udder jurors either got a win in de October race or had no opponents.

City Tax Vote Very Close

Voters in Lake Charles barely passed a 15-year quarter-cent sales tax — by a vote uf 7,590 to 7,187 — durin’ de October election. Dis tax, accordin’ to city officials, will mean $6 million a year to help pay for employee pay raises.

De vote for dis measure wuz very tight. But officials say it will make city pay competitive an’ will darefore help keep city employees. It’s been a problem for some time now dat de city haz been losin’ good employees to udder city bodies an’ to industries. De pay raise dis tax will generate will help keep some uf dem workin’ for de city.

Da Money Grabbers

If you’re like lots uf folks in our state, you’ve gotten notices from de Office of Motor Vehicles tellin’ you you owe money for not payin’ car insurance on cars you owned az far back az 1986. Don’t make much sense, do it? An’ de burden uf proof iz wit’ you.

State Rep. Barry Ivey uf Baton Rouge sponsored de bill. Never heard uf him? Me needer.

But folks, dis iz jus anudder example uf gubment tryin’ to grab every dollar uf your hard-earned wages. Dis gubment tinks day can cover shortfalls wit’ tactics de voters will not tolerate. Me, I smell some lawyers gettin’ involved in dis bigtime.

Now, Motor Vehicles issued a statement dat day had recovered $2 million since sendin’ out de letters. Day didn’t say how much overtime pay to DMV employees had cost. Dar again, gubment iz tellin’ you half de facts and expectin’ you to be satisfied dat day are doin’ a great job. Well, dat dog ain’t gonna hunt in dis case.

Louisiana folks are mad as hell an’ day ain’t gonna take it any more. Money grabbers is all dem legislators are … sittin’ in Baton Rouge wonderin’ what laws day can pass to get mo uf our money. Meantime, day just got a pay raise without even havin’ to vote on it. Day sed it wuz “automatic.”

What should be automatic iz dat legislators an’ all state officials can serve only one term … an’ serve at  zero pay.

McNeese, Area Teams Headed To Playoffs

At de time uf dis writin’, de Cowboys are 8-0 and ranked nationally. It’s like de old days, when folks wuz makin’ reservations for de national championship game in Katy, Texas.

Meanwhile, we have several high school teams dat are going to de playoffs.

So wear your gold an’ blue an’ support McNeese an’ your local high schools in de playoffs. Go to de games. You’ll see some first-class football.

Air Show A Big Hit

De air show at Chennault wuz a big hit despite dem havin’ to cut de show a day short because uf bad weather. We hope de officials will see fit to have de show again next year. We tink a yearly show would draw a lot mo fans afta a few years, and it would probably get a lot mo support from de community.

Now we know dar’s a lots uf expenses in puttin’ on such a show, but we also know our local supporters would step up an’ make it happen.

And Den Dar’s Dem Saints

We had all kinda given up on de Saints afta dar poor start. But day have bounced back pretty strong. Whether day have enough gumption an’ fire-power to make de playoffs remains to be seen. But Drew Brees  trowin’ for seven touchdowns in one game shore haz Saints fans yellin’ “playoffs” again.

But de Saints have to play some strong teams in de weeks to come. Me, I’ve got my smoker ready, and my Who Dat? shirt washed and ready to go.
