LOTS UF MESSAGES IN ONE PHOTO

It’s often sed a picture iz wort’ 1,000 words. However, de picture uf de Our Lady Queen uf Heaven students an’ teachers posin’ in de shape uf a heart speaks a whole lot more dan a towsend words.

PIERRE SEZ OLQH De picture taken to honor State Trooper Steven Vincent, who wuz killed, shows a bunch uf students an’ dar teachers lookin’ up at de cameraperson in de gym. Dat tells us de students find de event to be sad but are lookin’ up to God to help dem figure it all out … sometin’ lots uf adults are havin’ a hard time doin’.

De sunlight comin’ in from de right tells de students an’ all who view dis photo dat dar iz hope. Regardless uf how bad tings seem to be now, God iz lettin’ de sunshine in an’ better  tings are comin’.

Adults who look at dis picture can ax a whole lot uf questions, like how many in dat picture will be dead from alcohol or drug-related accidents an’ abuse before de age uf 30? How many will face difficult lives az a result uf becomin’ single parents? How many will destroy dar lives an’ dose uf udders wit’ illegal drugs an’ turn to crime to support dar habits? We can ax dese an’ maybe thousands mo questions while lookin’ at de picture.

Me, lookin’ at dis picture an’ tinkin’ uf Trooper Vincent, I tink uf de thousands uf law enforcement officers like Vincent who put dar life on de line every day for very little pay to protect us. Now, dem men and women are cursed at, spit on, an’ have bottles trown at dem … an’ yes, sometimes are even shot at an’ killed, like wuz de case recently in Bell City and Sunset. Folks, dem two are small towns … but big-time crime iz movin’ in everywhere, an’ we better be aware uf it.

We commend de photographer who took de shot, an’ uf course, we commend all our state troopers and local officers for de job day do. May God bless dem all.

Elections Shift Into High Gear

By de time you read dis, qualifyin’ for state an’ local offices will be over, an’ de races will be shiftin’ into high gear for de Oct. 24 primary. De only races uf any interest around here will be for state representative. One finds incumbent A.B. Franklin facin’ former Rep. Wilfred Carter and long-time Ward 3 Judge Tom Quirk. Dat district iz basically nort’ Lake Charles.

De udder will be to replace House speaker Chuck Kleckley. Dat one features long-time politician Mark Abraham an’ newcomer Dr. Keith DeSonier. Dat district iz what mos’ call “South Lake Charles.”

Now dar are gonna be a few Police Jury races. But mos’ uf dem will have little or no opposition.

We will have a complete breakdown uf de races in our next issue.

PAC Man Cometh

A PAC iz a political action committee organized to raise money for a particular candidate or cause. You read a lot about dar role in federal elections.

Jim Beam recently listed de amount uf money each candidate had from PACs. Day are az follows:

— David Vitter $5.6 million, wit’ an additional $6.6 million from individual donors.

— Scott Angelle $2.9 million, wit’ $550,000 from donations.

— Jay Dardenne $1.6 million in total donations, wit’ only $170,000 uf dis from PACs.

De only Democrat in de race, John Bel Edwards, haz no PAC money an only 900 grand from donors.

Do de math an’ you see dat Vitter has more PAC money an’ mo donation money dan de udder three major candidates combined.

An’ you ain’t seen nuttin’ yet. Beam wonders in dis same column if television will make a difference. Me, I can tell you dat if history holds true, it certainly will.

Remember Tommy Powell an’ de light bulb? He ran for de PSC an’ no one knew him. He sat near a light bulb an’ de announcer told you how great he wuz. He spent 700 grand uf hiz own money an’ won de first go-round. Now tings have changed since dat 1972 election, but TV does matter.

What will be interestin’ in dis one iz de run-off. Edwards an’ Vitter are predicted to make de run-off; each is pollin’ 30 percent. Wonder if de national Republican and Democratic PACs will join in on dis one.

Chamber Supportin’ Small Bidness

Me an’ my fran Max an’ his co-worker Herb went to de recent Legisgator lunch dat’s been helt in our great city for several years. All de state officials an’ mos’ uf de legislators wuz dar to eat a small steak on top uf grits an’ corn.

But day wuz also dar to help honor state Rep. Chuck Kleckley. A buncha big boys like Sens. Vitter an’ Cassidy an’ several congressmen got up an’ sed really nice tings about Chuck, an’ uf course, day presented him a plaque for his hard work. All who spoke talked about how he worked for small bidnessmen an’ McNeese.

De chamber iz also sponsorin’ some forums for de candidates for governor. Some have been helt already, an’ some will be later dis month. In all, Chamber President George Swift starts off de questionin’ wit’ issues dat involve small bidness. Atta boy, George an’ Chuck.

How Will We Remember?

Sept. 24 is an easy day for me to remember since it’s my birthday. Sept. 24, 2005, is, again, pretty easy for me since dat’s when de hurricane hit SWLA. De name … dat’s easy to remember … Rita: same az my mom.

Yes folks, de 10th anniversary uf Hurricane Rita iz comin’ up, an’ az we look back, we can see a whole buncha improvements dat have happened in Southwest Louisiana … an’ lots more to come. We commend Mayor Randy Roach an’ all de udder mayors an’ public bodies, like de Police Jury an’ de Chamber dat have made tings happen for us to have a much nicer place for folks to work, live an’ play.

An’ tanks to all de industries comin’ in we have a lot mo good tings comin’.

Jindal Uses Obama Visit To Fire Political Round

In recognition uf de 10th anniversary uf Hurricane Katrina, President Obama visited New Awlins and took de opportunity to push hiz climate change program. Now dar’s no doubt Obama haz never been through a hurricane, or he wouldn’t never dream uf one bein’ stopped by de federal gubment.

Gov. Bobby Jindal took de opportunity to point out dat de only reason Obama came to New Awlins wuz to push hiz climate control agenda. Ain’t politics in our state wonderful?

Final Shot

My fran Lefty called hiz bookie to set tings up for de beginnin’ uf football season. Hiz bookie, Jake De Snake, reminded him he still owed $100 from last year. Lefty told him to just carry it over. Jake De Snake told Lefty dat wuzn’t how it worked. Lefty told Jake day had different accountin’ systems. Jake tol’ him to find anudder bookie.  Anyone know a bookie Lefty can teach hiz accountin’ system to?

‘Til next time, lache pas la patate.
