What Newcomers Will Enjoy Most About Living Here

By Braylin Jenkins

Lake Charles and Southwest Louisiana encompass a zest uncommon in most places, and we are honored that our many newcomers can feel what so many area natives embody, probably without realizing it.

Cities, especially those that are considered a metropolis, have an overall attitude that they are known for, but when it comes to smaller areas, it is less about an overall attitude, and more about the environment, or the feeling displayed by the individuals who call that area their home.

Southwest Louisiana is confident without realizing it, and that confidence is founded on the natural resources and treasures that have surrounded the Lake Area for decades.

When it comes to identity or a pulse on the area, there is no particular word or description that accurately encompasses each type of person who lives in the area. What may be viewed as a negative to some is actually a major plus. Between the residents who call Southwest Louisiana home, and the thousands of international visitors, students and workers who frequent the area, a melting pot exists, and almost operates seamlessly, without mention.

As a melting pot with unprecedented growth on the horizon, newcomers will be a pivotal part of the area’s development and growth in the coming years. Anyone who narrows down the many jewels that the Lake Area possesses into one list of five or even 10 options must be out of the loop, because there are way too many to choose from.

Lagniappe, however, wanted to highlight 10 of the richest assets newcomers cannot and should not be without. So here’s the unavoidable list to acclimate you, presented in no particular order. This is the top 10 focal points that you will want to make sure you experience as Southwest Louisiana becomes a part of your life.

1. Sunsets

Sunsets have the ability to captivate you in a way that reaches the inner core of your being. Whether the builders of our area know it or not, we have a picturesque area that was designed to give us some of the most beautiful natural made artwork in the sky.

Sunsets can make a bad day better, turn a difficulty in forgiving someone into a moment where you question why you had ill feelings in the first place, and make whatever journey you are on feel well worth it.

Sunsets can also represent the closure of one day, and the possibilities of a new beginning with the next, which can often be the reset needed to push forward.

When Al Roker, NBC’s Today show weather anchor, and host of the Weather Channel’s Wake Up with Al‚ visited the Lake Area in May of 2013; he put Southwest Louisiana in the record books by capturing a beautiful sunset, and sharing it via social media.

Watching the sun set on a lake or river can make the experience even more memorable, but even if you are strolling or driving through the area, catching a glimpse of the setting sun should definitely become a habit in the latter part of the day.

2. Waterways

Water has a tranquil and magical quality to it. Southwest Louisiana has always had many blessings due to its proximity to water, and the resulting ability to easily transport goods, food and equipment. Many blessings have come about by way of water.

Waterways in Southwest Louisiana provide an adventure, escape and rejuvenating experience. The murky water color we see on the surface of our waterways simply means that they hold the rich soil that gives us the many unique crops, delicacies, economic opportunities and leisure amenities.

From Contraband Bayou to the Gulf of Mexico beaches at Cameron,  often referred to as the Cajun Riviera, to Charlie’s Lake, the scenic waterways offer unparalleled views and beauty that puts the Lake Area in its own category.

We have beaches along the lakefront and other stretches of the waterways in the vicinity which offer recreational options that few areas in our region of the country can say they possess.

Holly Beach and other beachfronts in the Cameron area bring their own feel and distinction to the area’s collection of beaches. Cruising the beach fronted neighborhoods along the Gulf Coast will strike a chord in your heart that resonates deep within.

3. Food And Beverage

While health and fitness are becoming a major part of life in Southwest Louisiana, very few people actually abandon the deliciousness that the area has to offer at any given moment. I’m almost positive that if we researched which area of the United States had the most foods shipped to other parts of the country, Louisiana ships out the most, and for good reason.

Yes, boudin, cracklins, king cake (when in season), and some form of liquor almost always make it to the table, but how could you possibly pass on the very elements that have created long lasting memories passed down for generations.

That statement may seem a bit deep, but imagine Southwest Louisiana without the staple foods and beverages that it is known for. If you read closely and are imagining that, you probably heard crickets chirping.

A main part of the zest of the Lake Area involves food, and even healthy dishes must include the spice and flavor of Southwest Louisiana.

The Lake Charles/Southwest Louisiana Convention and Visitors Bureau actually has a Southwest Louisiana Boudin Trail established, and it is no joke.

Do not even begin to mention the massive feasts that are prepared to accommodate the amount of guests at numerous parties that are planned, and even more that are unplanned.

Here’s a heads-up for you when it comes to food spots you should try. Each person has their own preference when it comes to how certain foods should taste, usually based on their childhood, and what their grandparents cooked. Advice is great, but don’t be afraid to go for it, and try a little bit of everything, until you find the right flavor and atmosphere that suits you. There are so many different types of po’ boys, gumbos, levels of spice and overall add-ons, your food journey in life up until this point will not even compare. Think of this as entering into a new dimension in the culinary world of possibilities.

With all of that said, at least try everything once, so that you will know for yourself what you like, love, and what you may want to stay away from. From the family staples that have been in business for decades, to the new specialty eateries and establishments, Southwest Louisiana has a wide variety of great restaurants, and that variety is broadening, slowly but surely.

 4.  Culture

The opening statement about an overall attitude in a large city can be replaced with the overall culture in an area like Southwest Louisiana. While time can change or alter the overall feelings, beliefs, way of life and customs that reign supreme, there are some that define an area.

While many Lake Area residents like to downplay the existence of culture in the area, the trust is that culture, and many of the other focal points that are being outlined, have become expected, and should definitely be cherished in a greater way.

The idiom “the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence” was most likely created by someone from the area who thought they needed a vacation, but really needed to refresh their drink. They obviously left and came to their senses, hence the creation of that idiom.

Considering the size of our area, we have an impressive arts and humanities community that would rival many cities throughout the country. The most exciting part is that the programs and events that are held in the area are continuously growing, which means anyone can join in and contribute their talents, interests and time without feeling as though they are locked out or limited.

When it comes to families and little ones, the area is proving to be a destination for families, with an ever-expanding list of options for family fun activities any week of the month, which again plays a role in shaping culture.

Needless to say, Southwest Louisiana has a great culture already defined and as the area continues to blossom, it can only improve as time goes on.

5. People

One day, the fine folks who make up Southwest Louisiana will wake up, stretch, and open their bedroom window before announcing to the world, “I’m happy as can be, and I can’t hold it in anymore.”

Here’s a dare: Get up right now and go to the window, open it, and stick your head out and yell, “I’m happy as can be, and I can’t hold it in anymore!” It may sound absurd at this very moment, but just wait, and you will hear a neighbor yelling sooner rather than later, then you’ll ask yourself, “Why didn’t I do it first?”

We have characters in the area, and each and every one of them is amazing. Why, you ask? Because they are honest with themselves. While so many others try to keep up with the person next to them, most genuine Southwest Louisiana natives know that, while they are happy for the person next to them and what they have, they are grateful for the things they have, and do not feel the need to be envious.

Southwest Louisiana is made up of some of the most caring, helpful and heartfelt people, but unfortunately those traits are often viewed as weakness, so many try to hide it.

Family matters greatly throughout the area, and friendship is basically a second family. No matter how dysfunctional, different, or in need of love, care and support loved ones may be, they will never be without, and are always a part of the family.

When it comes to the area, know that resiliency and support are staples in the community that makes up Southwest Louisiana. There is always someone on hand to assist if ever you’re in need.

6.  Gaming

No matter your stance on gaming as a business, Southwest Louisiana has made it clear that if money can be made, why pass up the opportunity?

Gaming resorts, in particular, have given our area a step up, as far as the amenities offered in the region, and those offerings bring in visitors from around the world.

If you want to feel like you are at a luxurious getaway destination, and want to spend a third of the money with less of the headache of travel, massive crowds, and having to leave your home for an extended period of time, Southwest Louisiana has it figured out: stay local.

Beautiful pool areas, an array of golf acreage, scenery, and escape from reality can be found just down the street, or within less than an hour’s drive. If you are a fan of gaming, know that you already have been granted a winning streak by landing in Southwest Louisiana, but even more so because you have some of the top gaming destinations located in close proximity to where you reside.

7.  Back Roads

You know those moments when you decide to take the road less traveled, and venture away from the everyday routine?

Back roads in Southwest Louisiana can lead to some new discoveries, new friendships, and a new favorite spot to spend time with those you care about. You can take the term back roads literally, or as those moments you typically wouldn’t think twice about.

In Southwest Louisiana, back roads are common, and help contribute to balancing life. From a literal standpoint, back roads can save lots of time on travel, provide that open stretch of road to clear your head, and hopefully the chance to see what your vehicle can really do.

Back roads also play a very important role when it comes to leisure activities. Some of the best spots to crab, shrimp or fish are on what seem to be hidden pathways.

Back roads alone help contribute to the long-standing view that the area is in fact a part of Sportsman’s Paradise, an important part.

The mention of back roads paints a mental picture of a relaxed and easygoing community that takes each day as it comes, and values life, always making the most.

8. Cultural Centers, Museums, Libraries

History can be a powerful resource, and Southwest Louisiana has a wealth of it; arguably more than the area knows what to do with. There are some that have taken time to understand the mystery of our area, its founders, the criminals who have used the landscape to go into hiding, the great names who are world renowned and grew up in the area, the amazing stories that derive from historical moments, and the many love stories that could put Disney’s princess stories to shame.

The Imperial Calcasieu Museum, Brimstone Museum, Black Heritage Museum,  1911 Historic City Hall Arts and Cultural Center and DeQuincy Railroad Museum are some of the museums that can assist with familiarizing anyone with our jewel of a region. On top of the historical information available daily, there are numerous exhibits featured throughout the year that reflect the area and beyond.

While most libraries focus on literature, and some of the new advances in technology, the history of the area can be found in great detail at almost every library in the area. This feature puts an emphasis on how vital history is to the region as a reference to the past, but also foresight into the future.

9. Green Space, Wildlife

While the region is covered in greenery, there are some places that are kept up specifically for visiting. Whether you love lush spaces like Sam Houston Jones State Park, located near the Moss Bluff area, or the types of green spaces that allow you to work on your follow-through for golf, there is a little bit of everything waiting for you in Southwest Louisiana.

Another green space that is referenced often is the football fields located throughout the region. Any excuse to soak up some sun and enjoy the great outdoors is encouraged in this region.

When it comes to wildlife, the many critters that inhabit Southwest Louisiana are viewed by many around the world as our pets. The wildlife also brings uniqueness to our area, and without them we wouldn’t be as nationally recognized as we are. Bird observations have become a niche leisure activity in the area, attracting countless visitors to the area. This sector in the tourism industry is growing so much that, only weeks ago, the Lake Charles/Southwest Louisiana Convention and Visitors Bureau unveiled the newly opened Creole Nature Trail location, rightfully named Adventure Point.

National publications and other media highlight the Creole Nature Trail as a whole as a top destination to visit in the United States, making it a must do for everyone at least once in your lifetime.

 10 . Memorials Of Reflection

While Southwest Louisiana may seem as though it is out of the picture at times, in comparison to the rest of the country, we hold some of the most important pieces and moments of history closest to our hearts. Many of our memorials are accessible at any given moment, and are usually located among beautiful scenery.

The 9/11 memorial on the lakefront serves as a local reminder of two area residents who lost their lives while assisting others during that day of tragedy. The 9/11 memorial, located at Memorial Point Landing on the promenade, remains a coveted staple, and without it, the lakefront would have a completely different tone.

Leading to the 9/11 memorial is a monument marker to commemorate the lives lost in the Pentagon on that tragic day.

There’s also Veteran’s Memorial Park, located further down the stretch of the lakefront.

The Southwest Louisiana region has a great respect for those who have served and are currently serving. The appreciation displayed throughout the region shows such a depth of respect for not only those who once served or are currently serving, but also their loved ones. It is that level of respect that makes for a closer, more tightly-knit community that feels more like an extended family than strangers.

A Side Note

The service industry in the area is sometimes poorly described, and should be accurately described for the record. It may seem as though the masses who work in the service industry on a daily basis are not overly zealous to accommodate you, or that they may not be giving their full attention to their customers. As an area, we have to remind our neighbors that not everyone is from Southwest Louisiana, and will take a while to understand just how hospitable residents can be.

With that being said, please know that everyone has the best intention of assisting newcomers in any way possible, and we sometimes overlook the fact that not everyone is familiar with the area, or needs a little extra assistance getting acquainted. Explain that you are learning the area, and would appreciate help, and you should see that person at their very best. If that does not work, possibly consider buying them a drink to de-stress from the day. Who knows, you may end up hearing one of the most amazing stories ever told.

For a city destined to grow and become even more desirable, for those who already call Southwest Louisiana home or will soon call the region home, the ride will be much more enjoyable, seeing it all come to pass. With the arrival of many new optimistic faces to the area, let’s continue to keep that hospitable welcome we’re so famously known for alive and well.

For the best collective highlighting everything in Southwest Louisiana,  go to visitlakecharles.org, and that one site will become one of your greatest resources. There are even apps that can be downloaded to keep you updated on events, and you can  navigate through some of the locations mentioned here, and much more.

If you are new to the area, welcome, and we hope you feel at home.
