THE CHRISTMAS OF SPRING

THE CHRISTMAS OF SPRING

I’ve never understood why Jesus came before mankind had figured out morning coffee and comfortable footwear but having Easter in spring makes perfect sense.

Spring has a grace to it. I’ve never yet earned a spring, but every year I am given one, as if I matter, as if what-I-did-with-last-year is not held against me, as if a certain Someone is cheering me on, maybe this will be the year,  waiting for me to either drill roots or launch a flower.

I’m long past the spring of my own life, but I appreciate these yearly young-again nature plays that God puts on free of charge. I’ve heard of old people willing themselves to live through their last winter, just to be able to enjoy one last spring, and I understand.

Spring is for all of us mutts, who need a lot of do-overs. Spring talks to me, says, “See, the yuck does end.” It says Fresh Start, Get In At The Beginning, Maybe You’ll Get It Right This Time.

This is the first spring of my life where I will be parentless.

It feels okay to go on and walk on, as they did, when it was their turn.

When you start nominating the good short words – love, joy, peace – I can’t really raise my hand until you say Hope. Me and Hope go back a ways.  In the winterish winter of my life it seemed like all I had to hold to was Hope. Before that hope was spelled with a little h, but now hope rates Hope, as tried and true, my link to God.

Spring is Hope fulfilled.

Spring is no time to be afraid, or held back. Life seems very Now and time seems very Fresh. Why not get out in it? Why not replant myself?

Here for a season, here for a reason…

My two little hands, clap, clap, clap, my applause to God and nature.
