School’s Open Wit’ Lots Uf Questions

Pierre Sez

Dependin’ on whare you live, kids are either back in school or day will soon be gettin’ back. Az dis school season opens, we have a whole lotta issues dat are bein’ faced, not de lease uf which iz de Common Core debate.

It’s a shame our courts have to be used to decide what will be de method uf teachin’ in our public schools despite legislative acts an’ de BESE boad follerin’ de fruit uf dem legislative acts.

Meantime, Calcasieu Parish haz a new superintendent, an’ he has hit de ground runnin’.

Now, to de issue uf school boad members. Come next January, you will need a program to figger out who iz representin’ who on de scool boad. You will have az many az nine current members not seekin’ re-election. Some have years uf experience on de boad. But we guess day are jus’ tired uf headin’ to meetins instead uf dar favorite fishin’ hole or dat vacation day an’ dar spouses have been talkin’ about for years.

You can watch on KPLC when dars a meetin’. Every member iz in attendance.

De fact iz, we will basically have a new school boad tryin’ to work wit’ a new superintendent day didn’t  elect.

A buncha bidnessmen have gotten togedder to make shure de best candidates fill dem vacancies. An’ if dar aren’t any good ones runnin’, dis group iz goin’ out an’ findin’ folks an’ talkin’ to dem about runnin’.

De group called de Committee for Better Schools in Calcasieu Parish haz helt an’ will hold some more informational meetins. In dar ads in our local papers, de group says dese are informational meetings for dose considering runnin’ for school board. Sounds like a recruitin’ meeting to me. We understand de group plans to provide consultin’ an’ money to de persons day pick.

Election iz Tuesday, Nov. 4.  Sulphur High haz probably bigger changes dan any udder school. Matt Walker Stadium iz bein’ renovated an’ won’t be available for Sulphur High School football games. So all dar “home” games will be played at LaGrange High Field. Some uf de diehard Golden Tor fans ain’t too fired up about goin’ to LaGrange, but day know de repairs to de stadium are much needed.

Robert Barrentine is de new principal, and he hasn’t sat around waitin’ for de firs’ school bell to ring. He’s been talkin’ to civic groups, explainin’ changes dat will come in de 2014-15 school year.

Udder Local Elections

We’ll also have some judges elections Nov. 4. Division A District Judge Kent Savoie is leavin’ de seat he’s helt for some time to run for de 3rd Circuit Court of Appeal. De only announced  opponent so far iz Lake Charles attorney Jamie Yelverton. Yelverton’s dad Henry wuz a longtime judge at de District Court l an’ later served on de Court uf Appeal. Dat Court uf Appeal iz a 10-year term.

Meanwhile, dar are three candidates so far in dat race to replace Savoie. Mitch Redd, a Lake Charles attorney, iz in de race; so iz Jackson Schrumpf, who does lawyerin’ in Sulphur; and David Paly, who’s wit’ de District Attorney’s office — dat’s a six-year-term.

District A covers basically West Calcasieu and South Lake Charles.

We’re startin’ to see signs for all three candidates in dis race an’ expect to see some TV ads pretty soon.

Meantime, District Attorney John DeRosier iz seekin’ re-election to his third six-year term. The only announced opposition is Lake Charles attorney Christian Chesson.

Senate Race Gettin’ National Attention

De Louisiana Municipal Assoc. helt its state convention in Baton Rouge de firs’ week in August. All three major Senate candidates spoke. Dar messages got national attention from de Washington Times an’ udder bigtime newspapers an’ news outlets.

Both de Democratic an’ Republican Party beaucoup want dis seat. An’ dat’s why you see so much advertisin’ for both sides in de form uf dar own campaign funds an’ dat uf de PAC (political action committee). Both sides have identified dis az a key race. An’ both sides know dis race could mean a shift in power in de Senate. Power iz very important in Washington.

At de LMA meetin’, Sen. Mary Landrieu spoke about her seniority uf 18 years an’ de clout she haz az chair uf de Senate Energy Committee. She didn’t mention Obamacare at all. Las’ year, at de Legisgator banquet, she said she would vote for it again. Bet she doesn’t say dat at de upcomin’ banquet, set for de 22nd of dis month.

Her top opponent, Congressman Bill Casidy, tanked her for support  for de long-delayed Keystone Pipeline project. But Casidy pointed out dat doesn’t matter because Democratic Sen. Harry Reid won’t let it come to a vote in de Senate.

Tea Party candidate Rob Maness sed de federal gubment wuz disfunktinal, an’ de way to change dat wuz to elect folks from outside uf Washington.

Lots uf money bein’ spent on dis. Wish I had what all three uf dem will spend from now ‘til Nov. 4th.

Mo Workers Means Mo Crime

A group uf folks in New Awlins recently held a protest against de crime in dat city. De group uf 200 wuz made up uf young and old, black and white. Day chanted, “Stop the drugs and the shooting.”

Considerin what’s happened in our area in de las’ few weeks, we tink it’s about time for a demonstration like dat in our area. Drive-bys, shootouts wit’ police, tryin’ to run police officers over wit’ dar cars … Dat’s de stuff you  read about in cities like Houston and New Orleans, not in de quiet little town uf Lake Charles.

An dars mo to come, an’ law enforcement knows it. Chief Dixon addressed a projected increase in crime recently, predictin’ an increase in DUIs and prostitution wit’ de influx of new workers. Da chief iz a former FBI man an’ he knows what he’s talkin’ about.

So it ain’t gonna be blue skies wit’ 20,000-plus folks comin’ to town.

On anudder crime note, we take our hats off to de FBI and local enforcement for  catchin’ Jose Manuel Garcia Guevara. Guevara wuz arrested for de rape and murder uf Wanda Barton. He den skipped to Mexico an’ haz been a fugitive since 2008.

FBI agents pointed out dat through cooperation with law enforcement folks outside our borders day capture people like Guevara. We applaud all of de hard work day did to make dis arrest possible.

SEC On Suddenlink. But At What Cost?

Az a sports nut, me, I don’t tink dars such a ting az too much sports on TV. An’ now dars even mo sports since Suddenlink haz agreed to carry de new SEC network.

Anyting to do wit’ Souteastern Conference athletics will be on dis channel; you name it: gymnastics, volleyball, baseball, football, swimmin’ and a whole lot more — 24 hours a day. (Dat makes some wives real happy.)

Now, Suddenlink only announced day would be carryin’ de network. Day didn’t say day would be booraying us on our bills for dis added network. Me, I don’t care how much it is, I’m gettin’ it. Geaux Tigers!!! Wonder if LSU haz a marble team.

Why All De Attack Ads?

I wuz watchin’ de Buffalo-New York Giants game wit’ a fran, an’ uf course dar wuz a U.S. Senate race ad in every break. An’ in each one, someone wuz being attacked. My fran axed why dat wuz so.

Here it is, folks. All dem ads are done outta state. Advertisin’ firms outta Washington an’ New York do dem commercials wit’ de guidance uf de political party’s people. An’ dat’s usually a bunch uf lawyers. An’ we all know how lawyers are in sometin’ like dis. Day like to go for de knockout.

Go to udder states whar Senate elections are goin on, an’ you’ll see de same kinds uf ads produced by dese hackers.

Deep Taughts While Tryin’ Out Dat New Gillette Razor

1) How good will de McNeese football team be dis year?

2) Will de new Cowboy on-campus basketball arena help improve attendance?

3) When iz T-John gonna bring me dem pears he promised?

4) De FDA wants to tax premium ceegars at a rate uf $10 per an’ destroy small

5) Do I have enough fishin’ gear and bait for white perch season?

6) Why does de doctor keep givin’ me pills I don’t take?

7) How many hot dogs did T-Bruce eat on dollar dog night at de las’ Astros

game he went to?

8) How many LSU players will be arrested before de start uf de season?

9) What nerve does BP have axin’ de Supreme Court to trow out a claim settlement

day agreed to?

10) Why are some uf dem big box stores who pulled all dar guns afta de Sandy Hook

shootin’ now advertisin’ firearms in dar back to school ads?

Final Shot

Lefty went to an Astros game in Houston wit’ a couple of buddies. He made de designated driver stop a buncha times on de way back to get some giggle juice. He showed up home at about 4 in de morning, an’ his wife was waitin’ for him. She axed why he was so late. Lefty replied, “none of your damn business.” Doctors say he should be out of de hospital in about a week. Wear your blue and gold.

‘Til next time, lache pas la patate.
